# state\_getMetadata - Polkadot

Example code for the state\_getMetadata JSON RPC method. Complete guide on how to use state\_getMetadata JSON RPC in GetBlock Web3 documentation.

This method returns the SCALE-encoded runtime metadata at a given block. The metadata describes the pallets, calls, storage items, events, and types the runtime exposes, and is required to decode blocks and construct extrinsics.

## Parameters

## Library Integration

The idiomatic way to call Polkadot RPC is the Polkadot.js API (`@polkadot/api`), which connects over WebSocket and exposes the method as `api.rpc.state.getMetadata`.
