chain_getRuntimeVersion - Polkadot
Example code for the chain_getRuntimeVersion JSON RPC method. Complete guide on how to use chain_getRuntimeVersion JSON RPC in GetBlock Web3 documentation.
This method returns the runtime version at a given block. It is a deprecated alias of state_getRuntimeVersion, kept for compatibility.
Parameters

Use Cases
Upgrade Detection: Detect runtime upgrades by watching specVersion
Compatibility Checks: Confirm supported runtime API versions
Legacy Tooling: Support clients that call the chain_ alias
Diagnostics: Read the runtime version at a block
Error Handling

The idiomatic way to call Polkadot RPC is the Polkadot.js API (@polkadot/api), which connects over WebSocket and exposes the method as api.rpc.state.getRuntimeVersion.
