# get\_current\_epoch - Nervos

Returns the epoch with the highest number in the canonical chain. Epochs on Nervos CKB last roughly 4 hours and govern reward distribution and difficulty adjustment.

| result.length          | Uint64 | Number of blocks in this epoch            |
| result.start\_number   | Uint64 | Block number where this epoch began       |
| result.compact\_target | Uint32 | Difficulty target effective in this epoch |

## Use Cases

* Detecting epoch boundaries for reward distribution
* Difficulty tracking
* Time-based protocol decisions (epochs are the time unit for many CKB operations)

## Error Handling

| Status Code | Error Message     | Cause                                                |
| ----------- | ----------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| 403         | Forbidden         | Missing or invalid `<ACCESS-TOKEN>`                  |
| -32602      | Invalid params    | Request parameters are missing or malformed          |
| -32601      | Method not found  | Method does not exist or is not enabled on this node |
| -32603      | Internal error    | Server-side error while processing the request       |
| 429         | Too Many Requests | Rate limit exceeded for your plan                    |
