# eth\_getCode - Linea

This method returns the compiled bytecode deployed at an address. An externally owned account returns `0x`, while a contract returns its runtime bytecode.

## Parameters

| blockParameter | string | Yes      | Block number in hex, or "latest", "earliest", "pending" |

## Response Parameters

| Parameter | Type   | Description                                                    |
| --------- | ------ | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| jsonrpc   | string | JSON-RPC protocol version ("2.0")                              |
| id        | string | Request identifier matching the request                        |
| result    | string | Hex-encoded runtime bytecode, or 0x for a non-contract account |

## Error Handling

| Error Code | Message        | Description                                                                |
| ---------- | -------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| -32602     | Invalid params | The address is not a valid 20-byte hex string, or the block tag is invalid |
| -32603     | Internal error | The node failed to read the requested state                                |
