system_properties - Bittensor

Example code for the system_properties JSON-RPC method. Complete guide on how to use system_properties JSON-RPC in GetBlock Web3 documentation.

Returns chain-specific properties — token decimals, SS58 address format prefix, and token symbol. For Bittensor: 9 decimals on the Substrate side, ss58Format 42, symbol TAO.

Substrate native JSON-RPC method. Call against a GetBlock endpoint configured for the Substrate interface. For typed SDK access, use Polkadot.js (TypeScript) or substrateinterface (Python).

Parameters

  • None

Request Example

curl --location --request POST 'https://go.getblock.io/<ACCESS-TOKEN>/' \
--header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
--data-raw '{
    "jsonrpc": "2.0",
    "method": "system_properties",
    "params": [],
    "id": "getblock.io"
}'
import axios from 'axios';

const data = JSON.stringify({
    "jsonrpc": "2.0",
    "method": "system_properties",
    "params": [],
    "id": "getblock.io"
});

const config = {
    method: 'post',
    url: 'https://go.getblock.io/<ACCESS-TOKEN>/',
    headers: {
        'Content-Type': 'application/json'
    },
    data: data
};

axios(config)
    .then(response => console.log(JSON.stringify(response.data, null, 2)))
    .catch(error => console.log(error));

Response Example

{
    "jsonrpc": "2.0",
    "id": "getblock.io",
    "result": {
        "ss58Format": 42,
        "tokenDecimals": 9,
        "tokenSymbol": "TAO"
    }
}

Response Parameters

Field
Type
Description

result.ss58Format

integer

SS58 address format prefix — 42 for Bittensor (generic Substrate)

result.tokenDecimals

integer

Token decimals on the Substrate side — 9 for TAO (1 TAO = 10^9 rao)

result.tokenSymbol

string

Token symbol — TAO

Use Cases

  • Configuring wallets and signers with correct address format and decimals

  • Formatting balances correctly (multiply/divide by 10^9 for human display)

  • SS58 address encoding/decoding utilities
